MORRISTOWN, NJ — Morristown Mayor Tim Dougherty proclaimed Sep. 15-Oct. 15 National Hispanic Heritage Month in Morristown, writing that "Hispanics have had a profound and positive influence on our country through their strong commitment to family, faith, hard work, and service." National Hispanic Heritage Month was first observed in 1968, and expanded in 1988 to cover a 30-day period from Sep. 15 (the independence day of several Latin American countries) to Oct. 15. Nationally, it is marked by a number of events, including virtual concerts, parties, book groups, discussions, and panels. In Morristown, where 34% of the population is Hispanic or Latino per the 2010 Census, the event has been marked in the past by parades, carnivals, and ceremonies. Mayor Dougherty encouraged similar celebrations, saying in his proclamation that "I encourage Morristown residents, community organizations and local officials to observe this month with the appropriate ceremonies, activities and programming."
