NAPERVILLE, IL — A Chicago man was sentenced to six years in prison Friday after pleading guilty to charges that he burglarized Naperville Jewelry during looting that took place June 1, 2020. Police say Joshua Captain, 24, who pleaded guilty June 29, 2021, was found with blood-stained cash and boxes of jewelry on him after the burglary. Police were called to Naperville Jewelry at 120 Water St. amid reports of looting. When they got to the scene, police found the store's windows shattered and jewelry and jewelry boxes strewn on the floor. Captain was spotted standing behind a counter rummaging through merchandise and drawers, a news release said. According to police, Captain ran to a back room and barricaded himself from officers before being taken into custody. Captain had jewelry and hundreds of dollars in cash on him, which was covered in blood, police say. Naperville Jewelry was one of more than 30 stores and restaurants that were looted in Naperville on June 1, 2020. Eleven people were arrested after the looting, which targeted businesses downtown and throughout Naperville. Captain must serve 50 percent of his sentence before he is eligible for parole.
