DOWNERS GROVE, IL — Two men have been charged with armed robbery after police say they used an airsoft pistol to rob Speedway gas stations in Downers Grove and Darien. Wanya Webb, 22, of Chicago, and Anthony Owens, 23, of Joliet, were on probation for armed robbery in Cook County at the time of the incidents, police say. Both men are being held in DuPage County Jail on $1 million bond. Police were called to the Speedway at 5004 Fairview Ave. in Downers Grove on Sept. 6 for a report of an armed robbery. The employee told police two men, whom police say were later identified as Webb and Owens, came into the gas station just before 9:30 p.m. displaying what appeared to be a handgun and demanded the cash drawer. Police say the employee complied and Webb and Owens then fled the scene on foot. The gun was later determined to be an airsoft pistol. A subsequent investigation led police to link Webb and Owens to an armed robbery that took place at the Speedway gas station located at 8226 Cass Ave. in Darien on Sept. 1. According to police, Owens and Webb used an airsoft pistol to steal the cash drawer from that gas station just after midnight, and then fled on foot. Police took Owens and Webb into custody Sept. 17 in DuPage County. "The identification and apprehension of the defendants in this case sends the message that if you commit a violent crime in DuPage County, you will be caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a news release. Owens and Webb are set to appear in court on Oct. 12. If convicted, they face a sentence of up to 30 years in prison.
