UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A young Upper East Side man died Sunday when he was struck by a driver after falling from a motorized scooter in Midtown, police said.
The crash happened around 11:17 p.m. Sunday in the First Avenue tunnel near East 48th Street.
Andreas Marino, 22, was driving a Revel scooter north inside the tunnel when he lost control and fell from the scooter, police said. A 44-year-old man driving a Toyota Highlander SUV then hit Marino, who was lying on the roadway.
Police found Marino, a resident of East End Avenue, suffering from severe trauma to the head and body. He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, but could not be saved.
The unidentified driver was arrested and believed to be intoxicated, according to the Daily News. Charges against him were pending Monday morning.
Since 2011, at least five people have been killed and 40 injured in crashes at the same intersection, according to city data — not including Sunday's crash. Those injured included 24 drivers, eight pedestrians and eight cyclists.
