First, today's weather: Clear throughout the day. High: 90 Low: 60. Here are the top stories today in Sacramento: The Farm-to-Fork Festival returned to Sacramento last weekend and it was a hit, bringing much needed dollars to a population of vendors that was hit hard during the pandemic. "It feels fantastic. Not only because we can employ more people," said Julio Ortiz, co-owner of Gaspachos USA, a fruit and juice bar. "Being able to get back out and feel the love of the people who support you and love your product, it really gives us life." (KCRA3) The victim has been identified in a fatal wrong-way DUI crash that happened on Thursday on Highway 99 near Elk Grove. The passenger of the vehicle that was struck—identified as Derrick Deion Simpson, 48—was later pronounced dead. The suspect that was driving the vehicle that collided with Simpson's has also been identified. He is 34-year-old Jacob McPherson of Sacramento, and he is suspected of having been operating the vehicle under the influence of a controlled substance. (Good Day Sacramento) The Sacramento Police Department on Saturday released body camera footage of a deadly standoff that happened Sept. 6 in the 3700 block of Redding Avenue, near Hiram W. Johnson High School in the Tahoe Park area. 911 audio plays over body camera footage showing officers at the home attempting to look through the window. The footage shows an officer identifying himself as police, and someone inside responding, "Get out of here." The man inside then introduces himself as Derek Scott Pearson and adds that "nobody is welcome at my house." Hours later, just after 5 a.m., Pearson is seen walking out into his open garage. Police said he was armed with a rifle and aimed it at officers. Three officers fired at Pearson and he was struck at least once, police said. Video released by police shows the shooting from three different officers' body cameras. (KCRA3) A Sacramento man and his two sons have been arrested after deputies tracked an illegal pot growing operation to them while investigating the shooting death of a man found in rural California. Butte County deputies found 33-year-old Melvin Garcia-Vargas dead with a gunshot wound in the back of an SUV parked along a remote road on Sept. 11, sheriff's officials said. Investigators determined Garcia-Vargas died at an illegal pot farm controlled by his father, Sacramento's Carlos Garcia-Hernandez. Carlos Garcia-Hernandez and his two adult sons, Juan Garcia-Vargas and Ronald Garcia-Vargas were taken into custody on charges of illegal marijuana cultivation, possessing marijuana for sale and unlawfully moving and disposing of human remains, sheriff's officials said. Juan Cruzcupido, 33, and Edgar Najera, 50, both of Sacramento, also were arrested. (FOX40)September 17th, 2021 marked three years to the day since Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputy Mark Stasyuk died in the line of duty, and Rancho Cordova city leaders unveiled a new sculpture to make sure his memory will live on for years to come. Many of the details of the structure are deeply personal to Stasyuk's life. An American flag, along with a Russian Bible verse on the back of the sculpture represent Stasyuk's heritage. The lower half of the sculpture depicts Stasyuk fishing, hiking and embracing his newlywed wife. At the end of Friday's ceremony, an eagle circled above as his family laid flowers at the sculpture's base. (6:30 pm) Sacramento Patch Notebook It sounds like a horror movie, but Torture Orchard is a grand experiment (or lots of them) where UC Davis PhDs are working to understand just how extreme conditions can get in the Golden State before our agriculture just can't take it anymore. Whether in a sterile lab or in a dusty farm row, these projects are focused on one objective: saving water. Because agriculture uses four times more water than California's residential users, growers are under pressure to tighten their water belts. These researchers are hoping to find ways for growers to use just what Mother Nature provides, even during drought years, rather than relying on water that is routed and regulated by government entities. (Comstock's Magazine)'Welcome Black,' an event hosted by the Sacramento State Black Student Union (BSU) at the beginning of every semester, returned for the first time since the pandemic began. During the event, BSU introduced and highlighted Black student groups to help new Black students feel supported at the school. One of the founding members of BSU, Khalil Ferguson, who graduated in 2018 with a degree in economics and international relations was in attendance promoting the Black Alumni Chapter at Sac State. "Since the inception of BSU, we just needed a space for Black students to be Black," Ferguson said. (Sac State Hornet) From our sponsors — thanks for supporting local news!
