LA GRANGE, IL — La Grange's weekly increase in new coronavirus cases was the smallest in a month, according to the Cook County Public Health Department. As of Sunday, La Grange, including La Grange Highlands, had seen 2,494 coronavirus cases since the beginning of the pandemic, 19 more than the previous week. The week before last, La Grange experienced 32 new cases. According to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office, the local number of recorded coronavirus-related deaths increased by two in the last week, to 34. The four latest deaths were Sept. 14, Sept. 17, May 24, May 22, May 14 and Feb. 13. All the local deaths have been those who were over 50, according to the medical examiner. The mortality rate among La Grange cases is 1.4 percent. About a tenth of 1 percent of the local population has died from the virus. As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,590,342, up 1.7 percent from a week earlier, according to the state Department of Public Health. The number of confirmed deaths so far is 24,546. Nationally, 41.9 million cases of the coronavirus have been reported, up 2.5 percent from the week before, according to the Centers for Disease Control. A total of 670,565 people have died from the virus in the United States.
