How does karma truly work?

When it comes to karma, I’m clueless, hopefully someone can explain it, someone with true knowledge. For example: I’m hearing a lot about immigration fraud and how broken our system is, but what really happens to the person that uses someone just to receive citizenship? Is it immediately? Does it affect their children or other family members? I would appreciate real feedback please. Thank you!
