HeightsNEXT is organizing volunteers for a Cleanup on Central Avenue and nearby parks. Volunteers’ efforts will freshen up local streetscapes and prevent trash from drifting with next spring’s melting snow through storm drains into the Mississippi River. Last spring, 57 volunteers of all ages turned out on a brisk Saturday morning to pick up trash along Central Avenue and in local parks as part of the HeightsNEXT Earth Day Cleanup event. Their efforts resulted in bagging more than 362 pounds of litter! Interested volunteers should meet at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, Oct 16 in the parking lot of the Columbia Heights Public Library, 3939 Central Ave NE, Columbia Heights. Bags & safety vests will be provided to aid in picking up litter. Volunteers should bring their own gloves and dress appropriately for trash cleanup. This event will be socially distanced, with each group of volunteers dispersing to clean their own section of Central Avenue or nearby park. Please wear masks when picking up and returning vests and bags! After volunteers complete their cleanup, they are invited to meet back at the Columbia Heights Public Library to return vests and celebrate the group’s efforts! The cleanup will occur “rain or shine”, so participants should dress for the weather. Refreshments for volunteers provided in partnership with Heights Bakery.
