Maryland Public Television (MPT) will air its special presentation of Destination Maryland on MPT-HD at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 21, and on the MPT livestream at mpt.org/anywhere/live-stream-mpt/. The half-hour program takes viewers on a road trip across Maryland to explore places, people, and experiences of interest to both visitors and locals alike. Hosted by Amber Moore at Fort McHenry in Baltimore, the travel show features five additional locations, with stops in Allegany County for a cycling tour on the C&O Canal towpath, Dorchester County on the Eastern Shore to uncover Harriet Tubman's life story, Solomons Island in Calvert County for a family's boating adventure, Montgomery County to contemplate contemporary art, and Harford County for a tasting of unique wine and food pairings. The fast-paced program features original theme music composed by Baltimore musician Mark Hopkins. A short preview of the show is available at youtube.com/watch?v=rbLwnrFSxrE. "Destination Maryland gives viewers a glimpse of the various assets that make Maryland a must-visit travel destination," said Maryland Department of Commerce Assistant Secretary Tom Riford. "Visitors and residents alike will learn more about Maryland's history, outdoor collection, Chesapeake culture, hidden gems, and more!" Featured during Destination Maryland are the following segments and locations: Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine (Baltimore City). Host Amber Moore looks at a pivotal moment in early American history from one of Baltimore City's most picturesque locales and the birthplace of the national anthem. The Calvert Marine Museum (Solomons Island, Calvert County). Viewers join an 11-year-old and his family as they explore the beauty and charm of Solomons Island. After a cruise aboard the Wm. B. Tennison -- a historic ship known as a bugeye -- there's a visit to the Calvert Marine Museum to explore a wide range of exhibits including the Estuarine Biology Gallery with playful river otters and Paleontology Gallery, which includes fossils from nearby Calvert Cliffs. The Vineyard Wine Bar (Havre de Grace, Harford County). "Foodie" segment host Adrianna David sips and samples her way through one of the upper Chesapeake Bay's culinary gems, a Havre de Grace hot spot known for its extensive wine selection and tantalizing menu. The C&O Canal Towpath/ C&O Canal National Historical Park (Western Maryland/Allegany County). During this segment, viewers get a glimpse of the beauty and history of the C&O Canal Towpath, a 185-mile route that winds its way through quaint towns catering to those on a pedal-powered adventure. Along the way, some cyclists dare to make their way through the Paw Paw Tunnel -- a spooky spot with a fascinating history. Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park and Visitors Center (Church Creek and Cambridge, Dorchester County). The story of Harriet Tubman is a powerful account of love and courage, and its setting -- the tidal wetlands of Maryland's Eastern Shore -- remains largely unchanged since Tubman's time. The segment explores several places that shaped the life and legacy of one of American history's most inspiring heroines. Glenstone (Potomac, Montgomery County). Some visitors to this site, about 15-miles from Washington, D.C., might call it a contemporary art museum, but that wouldn't be quite right. As viewers will see, Glenstone is a place that integrates art, architecture, and nature into an environment intended to be serene, contemplative, and thought-provoking. Works include a 37-foot sculpture made of flowers and another comprised of sound. Encore broadcasts of Destination Maryland are offered later that evening at 11 p.m. on MPT2, as well as 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 25 on MPT-HD and 9 p.m. on Wednesday, September 29 on MPT2. Check the program schedule at mpt.org/schedule/ for additional airdates in October. Destination Maryland is produced in cooperation with the Maryland Department of Commerce Office of Tourism.
