SACRAMENTO, CA — Two of California Gov. Gavin Newsom's children have tested positive for coronavirus. Newsom, his wife Jennifer Siebel and two other children have since tested negative, his office said Friday The children, who were not named, will be quarantined and have mild symptoms, Politico reported. His office did not indicate how they might have been exposed. "The Newsoms continue to support masking for unvaccinated individuals indoors to stop the spread and advocate for vaccinations as the most effective way to end this pandemic, Erin Mellon, a spokesperson for the governor's office, said in a statement. His office said the family is following "all COVID protocols." The announcement arrives on the heels of the governor's landslide win in an election to oust him from office. Newsom has four children, all under the age of 12, the minimum age threshold to become vaccinated under federal regulations. The news comes as coronavirus cases fall from their summer height but remain slightly elevated as the delta variant courses through the state. The state was also awaiting one final approval from a federal committee and from the Wester States Workgroup to begin offering booster shots of the coronavirus vaccine. The positivity rate was 3.5 percent on Friday, compared with 5.2 percent on July 23. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
