Top of the mornin' to you, people of Beaverton! It's me again, Ash DeMello, your host of the Beaverton Daily. Are you a local business owner or marketer in Beaverton? Our premium local sponsorships will keep you at the top of inboxes around town every morning. Contact us here for the lowdown. First, today's weather: What's that wet stuff from the sky? Oh yeah— it's rain! We went 51 days without measurable rain at one point this summer, so it may not seem familiar anymore. Check out the Notebook section for tips on staying safe as the streets may get slick. Expect rain until morning, starting again in the evening. High: 65 Low: 55. Here are the top stories today in Beaverton: A caretaker has been displaced, their house considered a total loss following a fire on Thursday afternoon. The house in the Greenway neighborhood served as a daytime youth care home through the Albertina Kerr program. Those who were home at the time of the fire were able to escape without injuries. Officials are still investigating the cause. (KATU)The Washington County Government announced plans to clean a homeless encampment located in the 800 block of SW Baseline in Hillsboro. Residents were given five days to remove all personal items and leave the location before the cleanup start date of September 21. Outreach workers are helping residents find new options for housing, and residents will be allowed to return to the site once the cleanup is complete. Activities at this and other similar encampments are now being coordinated by the County's newly created Encampment Management Program, which will offer support for things like sanitation and housing navigation, as well as a dedicated Sheriff's deputy to help address public safety concerns around encampments. (Press Release Desk) Tune in to OPB's Think Out Loud to hear an interview with Craig Beaver, the administrator for transportation for the Beaverton School District. He talks about the bus driver shortage and pandemic protocol in the state's third-largest district. Beaver says 23 of his 218 routes don't have dedicated drivers because of staffing shortages, and people like office staff and even Beaver himself are helping to fill the gap. Staffing challenges arise, according to Beaver, because of multiple layers of government regulations, the difficulties of working with children (think noise!) and the unpopularity of the split schedule. However, Beaver notes that BSD drivers get full benefits and a guaranteed six hours of work per day. (OPB News) Lack of affordable childcare is an issue that keeps many from re-entering the workforce and can place a serious financial strain on families. That tension might be eased in our community in the near future, as YMCA has unveiled plans for a new childcare center in Beaverton. The 14,000-square-foot facility, funded through the American Rescue Plan Act, is set to go in just behind the Beaverton Hoop. It will also serve as an education center featuring STEM and sports science curricula. The center is set to open around summer 2022. (Pamplin Media Group) Click over to Beaverton City Government's Facebook page for the latest update from City Hall, including a recap of the September 13 City Council meeting. The session included news on water rate increases, which should average to about $6 more for households each month. It also featured a report on congestion, safety and equity along Highway 26. THPRD reps talked about expanding park space downtown.
