Wawa Continues New Jersey Invasion With New Stores

NORTH JERSEY, NJ — The chain of Wawa grocery stores and gas stations — such a cultural touchstone in Pennsylvania that the stores have been mentioned on TV's "Mare of Easttown" — will continue creeping into North Jersey with a second store planned in Plainfield this fall. The first Wawa in Plainfield already opened last year. The chain also opened locations in the last six months in Cranford, Edison, and North Brunswick. Besides the second Plainfield location, the Wawa company plans to open stores in fall 2021 in 10 other New Jersey towns, including in Freehold and Eatontown (see list below). The store is famous for selling its submarine sandwiches — called hoagies in the Philadelphia/South Jersey region — as well as other staples. The new Plainfield location will be located at 1470 South Ave. Its menu is here. Interesting History The Wawa company has a long history, starting in 1803 as an iron foundry in New Jersey. According to the website, after that, "Toward the end of the 19th Century, owner George Wood took an interest in dairy farming and the family began a small processing plant in Wawa, Pa., in 1902. The milk business was a huge success." In the 1960s, home delivery of milk declined. So Grahame Wood, George's grandson, began selling dairy products through the first Wawa Food Market in 1964.
