Virtual Health Classes, Support Groups Offered This Fall

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — Free health education workshops and support groups hosted by Howard County General Hospital will be held in September, October and November. Living Well with Chronic Disease is a six-week virtual workshop for individuals living with or at risk for chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, depression, arthritis, lung disease or other long-lasting health concerns. Participants will learn techniques to cope with feelings of frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation, develop skills to communicate more effectively about their health and learn exercises and healthy eating habits to maintain and improve well-being. Caregivers are welcome. Wednesdays, Sept. 22 to Oct. 27, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., via ZoomTuesdays, Nov. 9 to Dec. 14, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., via Zoom Register at bit.ly/StartLivingWell. Living Well with Diabetes is a virtual, interactive workshop that teaches diabetes self-management skills to include goal setting and stress management strategies; glucose monitoring; skin and foot care; techniques to cope with feelings of frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation; skills to communicate more effectively with family, friends and health professionals; and exercise and nutrition appropriate for diabetics. Course materials are free and sent to the address provided at registration. Tuesdays, Oct. 19, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., via Zoom Register at bit.ly/LivingWellDiabetes. Cancer Self-Management is a six-week virtual workshop for individuals living with cancer and those who have been affected by cancer as well as caregivers. Participants will receive educational information and practical tools to help self-manage symptoms, challenges and day-to-day tasks in a small, interactive peer-to-peer class. Mondays, Sept. 27 to Nov. 1, from 6 to 8:30 p.m., via Zoom Register at bit.ly/CancerManagementClass. Diabetes Support Group is an ongoing virtual support group that meets once a month for individuals with prediabetes and Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes as well as caregivers. Participants will receive educational resources and social and emotional support to help with diabetes management. First Thursday of the month from 6 to 7:30 p.m., via ZoomThird Thursday of the month from 10 to 11:30 a.m., via Zoom Register at bit.ly/VirtualDiabetesGroup.
