Here are the top stories in Sacramento today: Two local high schools students are proving that girls do belong on the football field. Delta High's Kylie Chastain is a starter on the offensive line. At Rio Linda High, Sydney Grant is a linebacker and second string running back. According to the National Federation of State High Schools Association, since 2008, the number of girls playing football at the varsity level has gone from slightly more than 500 to almost 3,000. "I just love the contact. I love hanging out with the guys and just proving myself, proving my own," Chastain said. This is both girls' first year playing football, so they've had to learn the technical aspects as well as the physical ones. And they are gaining the respect of their male counterparts on their teams and in the league. (FOX40)The Pacific Gas and Electric Powerhouse, also known as Sacramento River Station B, just north of downtown is getting an overhaul. It will become the SMUD Museum of Science and Curiosity. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the California Register of Historical Resources and the Sacramento Register of Historic & Cultural Resources. Once the largest steam turbine power plant in Northern California, it generated power for the region until it was decommissioned in 1954. It has sat idle since and was in an impressive state of disrepair. The $52 million revamped facility is now set to open fall 2021. There will be a 22,800-square-foot addition that houses the state-of-the-art planetarium, classrooms, offices and a café. (Comstock's Magazine) The 13 school districts in Sacramento County are being called upon by the Sacramento County Grand Jury to require that all eligible K-12 students have a COVID-19 vaccine. The Grand Jury requires responses from the 13 Sacramento County School Districts and the Sacramento County Office of Education within 90 days. Those who don't respond could face fines. Kim Pedersen, spokesperson for Sacramento Superior Court, emphasized that this isn't a mandate but more of a recommendation to Sacramento County school districts. Currently, COVID-19 vaccines have not yet been approved for children under the age of 12. The report highlights that fact and also points out that "Only 39% of children ages 12-17 in Sacramento County have been fully vaccinated."
