BOLINGBROOK, IL — Bolingbrook may not currently have any adult-use cannabis dispensaries within village limits, but it could be possible one day. At Tuesday's board meeting, trustees unanimously voted to impose a 3 percent sales tax on any retail sale of adult-use cannabis.
In order to collect and distribute any recreational cannabis in Bolingbrook in 2022, the tax ordinance had to be passed before Oct. 1. Should dispensaries be allowed to open in Bolingbrook in the future, it's necessary to ensure they can be taxed by the village, officials said.
"While we are not approving cannabis in the village of Bolingbrook currently, we felt it was better to have this on the books so that if it does get approved, at least we are able to get our financial compensation," Mayor Mary Alexander-Basta said at the meeting.
Alexander-Basta stressed this was not a motion to approve recreational cannabis sales, but rather to get the motion passed before the deadline. Otherwise, the board would have had to wait until next June, she said, adding that the conversation around cannabis will continue.
In a recent iteration of Community Matters, Alexander-Basta hosted a question-and-answer session to discuss cannabis with public health and legal experts. Topics discussed included addiction, revenue and possible health risks.
