CLEVELAND — Nearly 300 Afghan refugees will be resettled in the Cleveland area over the next six months. Ohio is welcoming 855 Afghan evacuees through State Department placement program, Gov. Mike DeWine announced this week. The evacuees will be resettled using eight agencies, and they will mostly be placed in Northeast and Central Ohio. In the Cleveland area, US together, Catholic Charities Migration and Refugee Services, and the U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants will oversee the resettlement. While numbers are fluid, here's a current breakdown of how many evacuees each agency will assist. US Together — 85 peopleCatholic Charities Migration and Refugee Services — 100 peopleU.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants — 100 people In addition to the Cleveland resettlement efforts, an additional 150 refugees will be resettled through the International Institute of Akron. "These are individuals who have been partners with United States and deserve our support in return for the support they've given us," DeWine said. "Thank you to the resettlement agencies and communities who have stepped forward and demonstrated they have the resources necessary to help these individuals in their time of need." Nationally, the U.S. government is preparing to resettle approximately 37,000 Afghan refugees over the next six months.
