BERKELEY, CA — A 65-year-old man's death earlier this month first thought to be caused by a medical emergency is now being investigated as a hit-and-run collision, the Berkeley Police Department said. Officers responding to a Sept. 6 report at 12:35 a.m. of a man seen lying motionless near the intersection of Ashby and Adeline avenues found the man lifeless in the center median, police said. Fire personnel summoned by officers on the scene pronounced the man's death, according to police. With no signs of a collision on the roadway or trauma to the man's body, the man's death was initially thought to have been caused by an emergency medical condition, police said. But an autopsy conducted by the Alameda County Coroner's Office determined the man's injuries were actually consistent with being struck by a vehicle—making this the City's fifth fatal traffic collision. Police believe the collision may have occurred on the evening of Sept. 5. This is Berkeley's fifth fatal traffic collision this year, police said.
