You are invited to join the Northeastern University Asian Studies Program for the first speaker in this new series, Dr. Russell Jeung, who will be giving the talk "Anti Asian American and Pacific Islander Hate in the Time of COVID-19." The event will be held in the Cabral Center at the John D. O'Bryant African American Institute. Professor of Asian American Studies at San Francisco State University, Dr. Russell Jeung is author of books and articles on race and religion. He's written Family Sacrifices: The Worldviews and Ethics of Chinese Americans (Oxford U Press, 2019); Mountain Movers: Student Activism and the Emergence of Asian American Studies (UCLA AAS Center, 2019); and At Home in Exile: Finding Jesus Among My Ancestors and Refugee Neighbors (Zondervan, 2016). In March 2020, Dr. Jeung co-founded Stop AAPI Hate with Chinese for Affirmative Action and the Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council. It tracks incidents of COVID-19 discrimination to develop policy interventions and long-term solutions to racism. This new, university-wide series is called Asia, America and the World. The recent upsurge in anti-Asian violence and bigotry in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic has attracted renewed attention on a long-standing problem. This inaugural series invites a diverse slate of scholars from different disciplines—history, sociology, political science, and anthropology—to address critical issues confronting Asian American communities from a global or transnational perspective. The series is part of Northeastern University President Joseph Aoun’s Action Plan exploring ways to bring Asian American Studies to Northeastern. Please also join us for our next speaker in the series, Dr. Jane Junn. Dr. Junn's talk will take place on Thursday, October 7th at 4:00 PM and titled "Amidst Pandemic and Racial Upheaval: Where Asian Americans Fit" Register here.
