Description

Take a tour of the Church after assisting with the FREE Archaeology Dig! The Michigan Street Baptist Church has been a hub of abolitionist and progressive action for the past 175 years. The Church was constructed between 1845 and 1849 by the Black community that it has continuously served to the present day. At its earliest inception, the Church acted as an anchor for the Underground Railroad, helping to guide freedom seekers to Canada. With funding from the Network to Freedom, the Church is able to excavate the site and invite the public for FREE to learn what life was like in the 19th century for an African-American Baptist congregation by assisting in an archaeology dig. The Church was built exclusively by members of the congregation and the material culture found there will represent authentic material culture directly associated with the efforts of a Black owned and Black operated house of worship. Tours are free on Saturday 09/18/2021 as a part of Smithsonian Day, and on Saturday 09/25/2021 as a part of Doors Open!
