MALDEN, MA — The Malden Police Department honored slain police officer Edward Callahan on the anniversary of his death. Callahan and his partner were shot on Sept. 14, 1963 while responding to a robbery at a market on the corner of Pleasant and Pearl Streets. Callahan succumbed to his injuries on Sept. 16; his partner was seriously wounded. The suspect was arrested in Maine several days after the shooting. Police Chief Kevin Molis presented a red rose to Callahan's widow, Mimi, symbolizing that she has carried her burden with "dignity and grace," he said. "You are an example that the cost of public safety comes with a great sacrifice," Molis said. Today the Malden Police Department remembers the ultimate sacrifice of Officer Edward C. Callahan on September 16, 1963. Our thoughts, respect and prayers are with his widow, Mimi Callahan who carries her burden with grace, dignity and her own inspiring heroism.@NLEOMF pic.twitter.com/XBpPbZQ0WA— Malden Police (@MaldenPolice) September 16, 2021
