Franklin Resident and Former BBC “History Guy” Chris Woolf Previews His Memoir of Afghanistan Adventures, to Publish October 4 Mr. Woolf to Be Featured at the Local Author Book Fair at The Corner Spot, Ashland, September 19 from 2-5 Thirty years ago, Franklin resident and former BBC journalist and “History Guy” Chris Woolf got lost in a warzone in Afghanistan, with nowhere to go except straight through land mines. That was the start of a dizzying two weeks, chronicled in his new book, Bumbling through the Hindu Kush: A Memoir of Fear and Kindness in Afghanistan, which will be published October 4 in paperback, eBook and audiobook formats. Mr. Woolf will preview this memoir during the Local Author Book Fair organized by the Ashland, Framingham and Hopkinton Public Libraries, taking place from 2-5 pm Sunday, September 19, 2021 at The Corner Spot, 6 Cherry Street, Ashland. “I wrote this memoir at the urging of my daughter, Ellen, after many years of nightmares and reflections, as a way to chronicle a moment in world history. I never could have imagined its significance now, with new attention focused on the people of Afghanistan,” he said. Mr. Woolf’s visit with a foreign correspondent in the country began ordinarily enough. But when the two hitched a ride from Kabul with an aid convoy, they naively barreled into war, witnessing death firsthand as they passed soldiers who had been felled by IEDs. The return to the airport in Kabul 10 days later became a struggle in perseverance and “street smarts.” Along the way, they got to know the ordinary Afghans who sheltered them, and became the first journalists to pass through battle lines from Kabul and reach legendary Mujahidin leader, Ahmed Shah Massoud. Their guide, Abdullah, later became Afghanistan’s chief executive (until 2020), and led talks with the Taliban. Mr. Woolf, whose voiceover business, The Voice Depot, is also in Franklin, will recount more of his story at the book fair, along with several other local authors.
