Four UW System Schools Say 70 Percent Of Students Vaccinated

MILWAUKEE, WI — Seventy percent of University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee students are fully vaccinated for COVID-19, the university announced Thursday. Now vaccinated students are eligible for $7,000 scholarships through the UW System's "70 for 70" program, which offered students incentives for getting vaccinated against the virus. Students must be fully vaccinated by Oct. 15 and notify their campus to be eligible for the scholarship, the UW System said. All students in the UW System, except for UW-Madison or fully online, can participate. People are fully vaccinated two weeks after they get two shots of a Pfizer or Moderna vaccine dose or after a single dose of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. The UW System expects 85,000 people to participate in the drawing and students will have a 1 in 1,200 chance to receive a 70 for 70 scholarship. UWM is now the fourth campus in the system to reach 70 percent of its student body vaccinated. UW-La Crosse, UW-Madison both broke 70 in early September and UW-Eau Claire reached 70 Thursday, the universities said. UWM Chancellor Mark Mone said he commended students for the strength and resiliency they showed during the last year and a half. "I am especially proud of the responsible actions our students have taken to decrease COVID-19 cases and keep our campuses safe, open and vibrant," he said. Fixty-six of Wisconsinites have received at least one dose of coronavirus vaccine, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services said.
