Description

GREAT NECK, NY — Jewish reggae-rapper Matisyahu will be performing at Great Neck's Steppingstone Park on Sunday. The concert begins at 7 p.m. But the pre-concert festivities — including inflatable rides, food trucks, a live DJ — kick off at 4 p.m. Matisyahu, who burst onto the scene in 2005 with his hit song "King Without a Crown," is known for combining themes of Orthodox Judaism with reggae, rap, and beatboxing sounds. When he first entered the mainstream, Matisyahu was an ultra-Orthodox Jew who sported a traditional Hasidic look (think long coat, black hat, a long beard, and side curls — also called "payos"). But in 2011, the religious performer ditched his signature getup, opting for something more secular-looking. Despite the dramatic change, many of Matisyahu's songs still draw inspiration from the Torah and his love of Judaism. A large portion of his fanbase is Jewish, but a fair amount of people are also just reggae music and beatboxing lovers. Some of Matisyahu's hit songs include "One Day" and "Live Like A Warrior."
