SOMERS POINT, NJ — The familiar white signs recently posted on the new Target in Somers Point were taken as a hopeful sign that the store may be opening soon.
But a Target spokesperson said Wednesday that an opening date for the new store has not been determined yet.
"Our Somers Point store is planned to open later this year. We'll have more details to share as we get closer to opening the store," a store spokesperson said via email.
The Somers Point store is currently hiring for a variety of positions online.
The store has taken the place of the former Kmart in the Somers Point Plaza.
Sears Holdings, the parent company of Sears and Kmart, closed four New Jersey stores in 2019, including the Kmart in Somers Point.
The store's closure left a void in the Somers Point Plaza, a strip mall which also includes PetSmart, Big Lots and ACME Markets. The plaza features more than 25 stores.
The closest Target to Ocean City is currently in Mays Landing.
