AUSTIN, TX — A man who was possibly carrying a long gun near a southwest Austin middle school has been arrested Thursday morning, authorities said. Around 6:30 a.m. Thursday, medics and crews with Austin fire and police were called to an "active attack incident" near West Highway 290 and Monterey Oaks Boulevard, Austin-Travis County EMS said. Authorities received 911 calls around 5:40 a.m. reporting that gunshots near Small Middle School, located at 4801 Monterey Oaks Blvd., Austin police said. Residents were told to avoid the area and, if nearby, to shelter in place. Police later confirmed the incident, which they suspect was a targeted attack, took place at the Monterey Ranch apartment complex on Staggerbrush Road. Authorities received reports of a man walking around with a gun, possibly a rifle or long gun, at the apartment complex. A single apartment unit was involved, and a man was taken into custody. The middle school delayed its start Thursday morning until police cleared the scene, Austin ISD said. Officers are investigating an incident at West Highway 290 and Monterey Oaks Blvd. Monterey Oaks is shut down between Staggerbrush and W 290.
