SANTA MONICA, CA —Now that summer is nearing its end, it's time to say "thank you" to the many beautiful beaches that have been serving us well all season. That's right, September is Coastal Cleanup Month — and a statewide beach cleanup day is underway Saturday. Dozens of beaches spread across the coast of Los Angeles County will not only see the familiar beach towels, surfboards and fold-out chairs of visitors looking for a fun day in the sun — but the efforts of countless residents picking up discarded trash from the sandy shores. According to the California Coastal Commission, in 2019 more than 74,000 volunteers picked up more than 900,000 pounds of trash from beaches and waterways throughout California. Beach cleanups take place from 9 a.m. to noon, though if you are unable to attend a cleanup on Saturday, fear not — you can participate in a self-guided neighborhood cleanup in your local park or community. According to the California Coastal Commission, all you need to do is download the CleanSwell app on your phone and clean on your own time throughout September. In Santa Monica, here's where you can find your local beach cleanups: Santa Monica State Beach, 1600 Appian Way, Santa MonicaAnnenberg Beach House, 415 Pacific Coast Highway, Santa MonicaTower Rose, 300 Ocean Front Walk at Rose AvenueMother's Beach, 14031 Palawan Way, Marina Del Rey To register, residents need to sign up on the website and visit the map to see all the cleanups happening Saturday across the Golden State.
