Description

OAK LAWN, IL — Oak Lawn police will be checking vehicles to make sure that child passenger safety laws are being followed during National Child Passenger Safety Week, from Sept. 17 to Sept. 30. Through the end of September, officers will watching out for kids riding in cars, who aren't buckled into seatbelts or secured in car seats. "As parents and caregivers, we have a long list of things we do for our children to help secure their future. One of the simplest is to make sure they are in the right car seat for their age and size," said Sgt. Mike Acke, traffic unit coordinator for the Oak Lawn Police Deparment. "We encourage you to have your car seats checked. Make certain they are installed correctly, and kids are properly buckled in the right seat before you drive." The focus of Child Passenger Safety Week is to raise awareness and encourage all parents and caregivers to ensure their children are riding in appropriate car seats based on age and size. Proper installation is also key to making sure the seats are effective in protecting children. The campaign is funded by federal traffic safety funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and administered through the Illinois Department of Transportation.
