MISSION VIEJO, CA — Newhart Middle School in Mission Viejo got a little bit bigger over the summer, and now, residents of the community can get a firsthand look at the school's new STEAM facility. An open house for the new classroom and lab building is being held by the Capistrano Unified School District Sept. 23, and all are invited to stop by and take a look at the new 22,475 square-foot space.
The two-story building is dedicated entirely to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math classes (commonly referred to as STEAM classes), and is funded by Mission Viejo Redevelopment school funds. The facility features two science labs, three science classrooms, three math classrooms, an art media/video production lab and a Career Technical Education lab.
"With this new STEAM building, Capistrano Unified continues its commitment to encouraging learning in science, technology, engineering, arts and math — all growing and crucial fields for our future," Superintendent Kirsten Vital Brulte said in a statement. "We are very excited for our students and teaches to settle into this new, upgraded space."
The upgrades include "short throw" projectors, an instructional audio system, wireless teacher microphones and Wi-Fi bandwidth to support up to three devices per student and teacher.
Members of the CUSD Board of Trustees, district leaders and city officials will be attending to open house event. Residents interested in seeing the new building can attend the open house, which will take place at 3 p.m. on Sept. 23 at Newhart Middle School, 25001 Veterans Way, Mission Viejo.
