JOLIET, IL — Joliet police officers working the overnight shift arrested a 22-year-old resident in connection with a house being shot up in the unit block of Mississippi Avenue, on the city's east side.
Kehwon Watts charged with aggravated discharge of a gun, aggravated unlawful use of a gun, unlawful possession of ammunition and having no Firearm Owners Identification card.
The incident that led to his arrest happened around 10:55 p.m. Wednesday.
"An officer was patrolling the area of First Avenue and Mississippi Avenue at which time the officer observed (someone) run from a vehicle in an alley between Iowa Street and Mississippi Avenue," Joliet police reports show.
Moments later, the officer heard several gunshots fired, and the officer notified other Joliet police officers of the shooter's description.
"Officers caught up to a fleeing individual who matched the suspect description given over the radio in the 100 block of Iowa Street," Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English stated. "Watts was positively identified as the suspect and was placed into custody without incident."
Joliet police said officers recovered a .45 caliber handgun in the 100 block of Mississippi Avenue, not far from where police said they saw Watts running.
A house in the unit block of Mississippi was struck by bullets, but nobody inside the residence was injured, police said.
Watts was booked into the jail around 3:15 a.m. Thursday. He lives in the 400 block of East Washington Street.
