ELMHURST, IL – One place that burglars likely avoid is near a police station. But that wasn't the case this week in Elmhurst.
According to police, a string of car break-ins happened on Monday and Tuesday in downtown. One was listed as taking place at 125 E. First St., the police station's address.
About 2 a.m. Tuesday at the police department, a witness saw a man standing next to a car while he was holding a flashlight. The suspect then rode his bicycle on Commerce Parkway and into the Egg Harbor parking lot, police said.
The witness returned and found the driver's window was smashed and money was missing.
The suspect was described as male, white, 17 to 20 years old, having a thin build and brown eyes, and wearing a black face mask, a navy blue hooded sweatshirt with the hood up, jeans, white sneakers and a BMX-style bicycle.

An unlocked car was burglarized overnight Monday in the 100 block of Park Avenue. The owner discovered damage on the plastic steering column and ignition. Several items were stolen. A car was burglarized about 5 a.m. Tuesday in the 100 block of West First Street. Entry was forced through the driver's side window. Nothing appeared to be missing. A car was burglarized between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday in the 100 block of North Addison Avenue. Entry was forced through the driver's side window. Nothing appeared to be missing.
