Looking for a Needle in the Haystack

Wilmington NC

Description

I am searching for the proverbial “needle in the haystack” and would appreciate any assistance. As I ready myself to enter the Marine Corps retired reserves, I am on one final mission. A few months ago I found out I was eligible for a recognition award when I swam into a rip current and pulled two drowning people to safety after the lifeguards on duty apparently disappeared. After about 13 years I am attempting to find a mother, her son and her father who were caught in the rip current. I thought that perhaps we might get to that seven degrees of separation or tap into the power of social media to find these people. Approximately 13 years ago (the end of summer but prior to Labor Day), I was at the Ft Fisher Beach Recreation Area in the Ft Fisher State Park, North Carolina. It was a sunny hot day with strong surf. The three people involved were a mother (mid 30’s), son (8) and her father (60’s). The three were swept past the breakers and heading seaward in a wicked strong rip current. Most visitors at this beach are generally from somewhere in North Carolina; Raleigh or somewhere along the 95 corridor or quite possibly right here in Wilmington, NC. If by chance you are them, or you heard this story long ago and know them, maybe you can get them in touch with me. A statement from any of them would be immense in my receiving a long overdue recognition as I am put out to pasture – we will call it my retirement “gold watch.”
