The DISCOVERING ME...WITHOUT YOU PERSONAL ESSAY CONTEST FOR TEEN GIRLS 14-17 is accepting submissions NOW through Oct. 31 (midnight). The top cash prize is $1,000. There is no fee to participate in the contest. However, entrants must live and attend school in the DMV.Girls between the ages of 14 and 17 are asked to share their narratives about growing up without the daily presence of their fathers in their lives. Most important, each contestant is asked to reveal her story of self-discovery: how she has come to know her self-worth and value; how she has come to recognize her imperfections but also her strengths; and how she believes she can succeed in the world despite the challenge of fatherlessness.Essays between 750 words and 1500 words are being accepted NOW through October 31, 2021 (midnight). Miajah Spriggs won the first place prize in 2019. In 2020, she served as a judge. She understands what judges will be looking for, and as an accomplished writer can help participants think through how to craft their essays with an eye toward walking away with one of the three cash awards.
