Description
Loyola is hosting a free screening of Just Mercy on Monday, September 20, 2021 at 7pm at The Senator Theater. A powerful and thought-provoking true story, “Just Mercy” follows young lawyer Bryan Stevenson (Jordan) and his history-making battle for justice. After graduating from Harvard, Bryan might have had his pick of lucrative jobs. Instead, he heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned, with the support of local advocate Eva Ansley (Larson). One of his first, and most incendiary, cases is that of Walter McMillian (Foxx), who, in 1987, was sentenced to die for the notorious murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite a preponderance of evidence proving his innocence and the fact that the only testimony against him came from a criminal with a motive to lie. In the years that follow, Bryan becomes embroiled in a labyrinth of legal and political maneuverings and overt and unabashed racism as he fights for Walter, and others like him, with the odds and the system stacked against them. Tickets are FREE for community members. Community members may reserve their tickets through Eventbrite. Please be able to show a paper or electronic copy of your ticket when you arrive at the Senator Theater. Masks are required in The Senator Theater. Established as Loyola College in Maryland by John Early and eight other members of the Society of Jesus in 1852, it is one of 28 member institutions of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, the ninth-oldest Jesuit college in the United States, and the first college in the United States to bear the name of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus. A signature component of Loyola’s 2008-15 strategic plan, Messina supports and enhances a vibrant campus climate that engages first-year students, faculty, administrators, and the broader community in distinct and meaningful ways, including an emphasis on reflection and discernment, critical thinking, inclusive community building and integrated learning.
