Description

Discover how your tracking skills can lead to clues about the ecology that surrounds us every day. Course Information:This program for experienced tracking students will visit a natural area in the Quabbin region of west central Massachusetts where there is abundant forest, field and wetland. The program will be led by David Brown, a highly experienced tracker, and will concentrate on finding, identifying and interpreting wildlife sign. The last part, called “eco-tracking,” seeks to answer two questions: what was the animal doing and why was it here? By answering these queries we can discover the relationship between the animal and its environment, the definition of ‘ecology.’ Along the way we can practice discovering the life that is all around us but hides from us in foliage and the night. Program participants will meet in the back room of the Petersham Country Store on the common in Petersham by 9:45. The store provides everything from breakfast to trail snacks and has a lavatory. After a brief introduction we will carpool to a local area for 4-5 hours of walking in the woods. For directions and preparations, please see the Quabbin Trails page! Please note that this is a class for folks who are already fairly knowledgeable in tracking. We do have many wildlife tracking courses for beginners listed on our website: www.americanoutdoorschool.com/boston-schedule!
