DUNEDIN, FL — During a candlelight memorial service held at the Dunedin Boat Club this past Sunday to remember the 13 service members killed last month at Kabul's airport, American Legion Post 275 Commander Sid Damsgard joined leaders of VFW Post 2550, the Dunedin-Clearwater chapter of The Military Order of the Purple Heart and Tampa Bay Veterans Alliance to say a few words in their honor.
"It's important we, the American people, honor and pay tribute to these brave troops who served their country and paid the ultimate sacrifice," said Damsgard. "We are saddened by the needless loss of these 13 lives during the Aug. 26 attack on Kabul's airport."
Cindy Cole, Dunedin Boat Club vice commodore, and her team were responsible for inviting the veterans groups to participate and putting together the thoughtful tribute.
"Thank you to John Tornga, Father Bob, Sid Damsgard, Mal Clingan and Rachel Hughs for your heartfelt tributes," said Cole.
After each delivered their words, a lone bagpiper played a tribute, followed by 13 white roses thrown in the water one at a time for each service member killed in the attack.
"We must also always remember and honor the lives of the more than 4,000 soldiers killed in Afghanistan the past 20 years. They are all heroes," said Damsgard.
