Trumbull To Host Pickleball Tournament At New Unity Park Courts

TRUMBULL, CT — Trumbull's Parks & Recreation Department will host a pickleball tournament on Sept. 26, the town's first at the recently completed pickleball courts at Unity Park, according to Noreen Wilpiszeski, recreation program manager. The six new courts at Unity Park took two months to build, and they are part of a bonded multi-year capital project. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will precede the tournament on the 26th. "The engineered post-tension concrete courts, fencing, and netting are built to professional quality standards and will provide the greatest possible longevity of use for the facility," Wilpiszeski said in an email to Patch. Pickleball, which is played with a solid racquet or paddle, "combines elements of badminton, table tennis, and tennis," according to Wikipedia. It is low-impact, and generally is easier to pick up, and requires less running, than tennis. Wilpiszeski said that the sport "has grown tremendously in our community, as it has throughout the Northeast Corridor." The department also offers beginner lessons and drop-in pickleball leagues. The "Battle of the Paddles" event on the 26th will be a scramble-format tournament that costs $20 per player.
