MERIDEN, CT — Two people were hospitalized after a crash that involved three vehicles, including two tractor-trailers, and shut down a portion of I-91 South in Meriden on Wednesday morning, according to Connecticut State Police.
Police said the accident happened around 7:40 a.m. near Exit 17 in Meriden when the driver of a Toyota Camry "unsafely crossed" into the center lane and struck the passenger side tire and quarter panel area of a tractor-trailer.
The impact caused the tractor-trailer to veer to the left where it struck the passenger's side of another tractor-trailer, which redirected it back to the right and caused it to jack-knife and collide with the front end of the Camry, according to police.
The tractor-trailer continued toward the right shoulder where it struck and went through the metal beam guard rail in the right shoulder, dragging the Camry with it through the guard rail, according to police.
After being struck, the other tractor-trailer was knocked to the left into the median where it struck the metal beam guard rail and rolled over onto its driver's side, police wrote in the accident report.
Witnesses told police that the driver of the Camry was "weaving in and out of lanes" before the accident happened, according to the report.
Police said all drivers reported minor injuries, and both tractor-trailer drivers were taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
The driver of the Camry was issued a misdemeanor summons for reckless driving, failure to maintain proper lane and improper passing/cutting in.
