HOBOKEN, NJ — The city of Hoboken released this week's COVID-19 case numbers and trends, showing that local hospitalizations are up, particularly among unvaccinated patients. The city also provided links to where to get tested or vaccinated. On Friday, Sept. 10, nine people were hospitalized at Hoboken University Medical Center with COVID-19, two of whom are Hoboken residents, the city said. One of the hospitalized patients is vaccinated and the other eight are unvaccinated. According to the city, the Hoboken Health Department confirmed 56 new cases of the virus from Sept. 4-10. Those numbers show a slight decline after rising over the summer amid the highly transmissible Delta variant. Here are numbers from past weeks: Aug. 21-27: 90Aug. 9-16: 71 (7 days rather than 6)Back in June, there were only 1 to 8 new cases each week in total. Since the beginning of the pandemic, there have been a total of 5,616 known, confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 56 fatalities in Hoboken. Below is the breakdown of recent positive COVID-19 cases by age group since the last update: 0-11: 912-19: 120-29: 1630-39: 1940-49: 650-59: 060-69: 276+: 0 Vaccine Information "The vaccine continues to prevent the majority of COVID-related hospitalizations and deaths," said Mayor Ravi Bhalla in a message from the city. "According to the state, of the 5.3 million New Jersey residents who are fully vaccinated, 0.35 percent tested positive for COVID-19, 0.007 percent of fully vaccinated individuals were hospitalized for COVID-19, and 0.002 percent of fully vaccinated individuals died due to COVID-19 complications." While vaccinated people can still get the virus, they are less likely to be hospitalized or die from it medical professionals say. New Jersey is among the 15 states with the lowest death rates in the country from the virus. As of last week, the State has identified 16 cases caused by the Mu variant, while the Delta variant makes up about 98 percent of variants in New Jersey. The CDC has not yet classified Mu as either a variant of concern or a variant of interest, but the CDC and the NJ Department of Health are continuing to monitor, evaluate, and collect data on this variant." Of those, 128 are on ventilators. The Friday before that, on Sept. 3, 1,054 people in New Jersey were being treated in hospitals for COVID, 109 on ventilators. Mayor Ravi Bhalla said Tuesday that the federal COVID-19 relief awards are coming for 179 local businesses. Of the 179 Hoboken businesses that will be awarded grant funding through the city, 115 will also receive a $1,500 vaccine bonus as 75 percent of their employees are fully vaccinated. Medical professionals say the COVID-19 vaccine is 95 percent effective against the virus, and while vaccinated people may have "breakthrough cases" — particularly among Delta — there is a lower chance of hospitalization or death for those vaccinated.
