Here are the top stories today in Burlington and Central Vermont: A long-awaited assessment of the Burlington Police found serious departmental deficiencies, including inefficient staffing, inadequate training, a lack of oversight and evidence of racial bias. Some bright spots in the report included its plans to hire unarmed civilians to certain calls, the hiring of a social worker and an overall reduction in traffic stops. Last summer, the department cut its department down to 74 sworn officers. (Seven Days) The sponsor of a bill that would have made Burlington the first city in America to divest from Israel is withdrawing his legislation. Councilmember Ali Dieng cited concerns that the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement would promote anti-Semitism. The city's mayor also expressed similar concerns about the resolution. (Intermountain Jewish News) A new program in Central Vermont is helping expectant Washington County parents by connecting them with doulas. (WCAX) A walking tour of Burlington's Old North End markets past and present begins Saturday and continues weekly through October.
