PETALUMA, CA — A Petaluma man was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and multiple other charges in connection with a fight Monday in a residential area, police said. Officers were sent to the intersection of West and Kentucky streets around 1:35 p.m. Monday in response to a 911 call about two people in a physical altercation, Petaluma police Lt. Nick McGowan said. The caller said one of the people involved had a gun. When officers got there, the person described as having the gun disappeared into a nearby house. "The other involved party was cooperative with officers and was escorted away from the scene to provide a statement and receive a medical evaluation," McGowan said. The victim confirmed he got in a fight with Richard Crandall and told police Crandall threatened to kill him with the gun. The victim told police Crandall inserted the magazine into the gun, loaded it, and pointed it at him, McGowan said. "Petaluma police officers negotiated with Crandall to exit his residence, and Crandall eventually complied without the use of any force," McGowan said. Once outside, Crandall cooperated with the officers but he no longer had the gun on him and he declined to tell them where it was, the lieutenant said. "The Petaluma Police Department Investigations Unit obtained a search warrant for Crandall's residence and recovered numerous firearms, including an assault rifle and a high-capacity magazine," McGowan said. Crandall was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats and brandishing a firearm. The 67-year-old Petaluma man remained behind bars Tuesday in lieu of $51,000 bail, according to Sonoma County jail records. Crandall's arrest charges also included suspected possession of methamphetamine for sale, suspected possession of an assault weapon, and probation violation, jail records showed.
