West Nile Virus-Infected Mosquitoes Found In Palo Alto Area

PALO ALTO, CA — Positive West Nile virus mosquitoes have been identified in areas of Palo Alto and Mountain View, according to the Santa Clara County Vector Control District. The zip codes affected are 94043, 94303 and 94306. The county will conduct a truck-mounted treatment for these areas on Friday beginning at 10 p.m. that is expected to last around three hours. The area affected is centered at West Middlefield Road and San Antonio Road. West Nile virus infection doesn't cause symptoms in most people, but can lead to fever, headache and body aches in some older and immunocompromised people. There was one human fatality in 2020 related to West Nile virus in California. People can prevent the spread of West Nile virus by dumping or draining standing water and limiting outdoor activity to prevent mosquito bites. The vector control district's surveillance program predicts locations more likely to have disease-transmitting mosquitoes and initiates an adult mosquito control treatment.
