RI Treasurer Officially Announces Bid For Governor

PROVIDENCE, RI — Rhode Island's Democratic gubernatorial race just got a little more crowded. General Treasurer Seth Magaziner announced his bid for governor Tuesday morning. Magaziner said he wants to "Restor[e] the American Dream not just for the lucky few, but for every hardworking Rhode Islander." Magaziner has been Rhode Island's treasurer since 2015. A Bristol native, he previously worked as an elementary school teacher and in investing. "I'm running for governor because I believe the future of our state is hanging in the balance, and we must build a new, modern, resilient economy that gives every Rhode Islander a real chance to succeed," Magaziner said. "Now is the time to bridge divisions and to move past the old ways of doing things. We must seize this moment to build the future that Rhode Islanders deserve." Magaziner announced his candidacy at Henry J. Winters Elementary School. The school is under construction, part of the plan drawn up by Magaziner during his time in office. To date, the program has allocated about $1.4 billion to schools, Magaziner's campaign said. Magaziner is not the only top state official to throw his hat into the ring. In May, Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea announced her campaign.
