LOS ANGELES —The Los Angeles Public Library (LAPL) announced Wednesday the launch of a new virtual Alzheimer's Educational Workshop series which will touch on topics like brain health, memory loss and early signs of Alzheimer's disease. The series is done in partnership with Alzheimer's Los Angeles and will feature sessions in Spanish. The series begins at 1 p.m. Thursday, with a session titled "Keeping Your Brain Healthy," and will continue through Nov. 4. Upcoming sessions include: "Memory Loss & Alzheimer's - Normal Aging vs. Signs of Dementia," "Making Home Safe" and "Tips and Strategies for a Healthier Brain." The LAPL said the series is done in honor of World Alzheimer's Month, which is September. "We welcome the opportunity to work with Alzheimer's Los Angeles to raise awareness about brain health and lifestyle choices that promote healthy aging," said Caroline Zakarian, adult librarian at the Los Angeles Public Library. "We believe this partnership with Alzheimer's Los Angeles will help to educate Angelenos about the signs of this disease that continues to affect so many families in our community." According to a release, during the workshop series, participants will learn the difference between normal aging and potential signs of Alzheimer's, and about other types of dementias. The series also will provide a comprehensive overview of Alzheimer's disease and its effects, including what causes memory loss. Like many health issues, early detection of Alzheimer's allows an individual afflicted with the disease to begin medication sooner and take a more active role in their care plan, series organizers said. The LAPL said the program is ideal for seniors and adult caregivers. For more information about the Alzheimer's series and to get Zoom links for the program visit the LAPL website.
