PITTSBURGH, PA — Carnegie Mellon University is the best institution of higher education in Pittsburgh and southwestern Pennsylvania. That's according to U.S. News and World & World Report, which just released its 2022 best college rankings nationwide. To determine the rankings, U.S. News first places each school into a category based on its mission and, in certain cases, its geographic location. National universities, which focus on research and offer several doctoral programs, are ranked separately from liberal arts colleges. In its regional rankings, U.S. News only compares universities and colleges with other schools in the same group and region. According to U.S. News, there are more than 100 four-year, degree-granting institutions in Pennsylvania, including large research universities, midsize colleges, small liberal arts schools and several specialty schools. The specialty schools include Pennsylvania are art schools, seminaries and health sciences institutions.
