PITTSBURGH, PA — U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers confiscated two shipments of counterfeit COVID-19 vaccination cards in Pittsburgh over the past two weeks. The first seizure occurred Aug. 24 and involved 20 cards; the second happened on Sept. 7 and involved 50. In both instances, the cards were shipped from China and headed for a Beaver County address. The cards were seized after officers noticed they were of substandard quality and not being imported by consignees from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention or a certified medical entity. Border Protection officers in Chicago, Memphis and Anchorage, Alaska, have seized more than 6,000 counterfeit COVID-19 vaccination cards. "Coronavirus and its variants continues to pose a serious health and safety threat to American citizens, and so do unscrupulous vendors who peddle counterfeit COVID vaccination cards," said William Fitting, the agency's port director in Pittsburgh. "Customs and Border Protection will continue to intercept counterfeit goods, such as these fake vaccine cards, that threaten our nation, our people and our economy." The investigation is ongoing.
