HOOVER, AL — The Hoover Board of Education voted to extend the school system's mask requirement order, which was set to expire Sept. 20. The new policy will be re-examined weekly, according to a Hoover Sun report. Superintendent Dee Fowler said the new plan will require the overall percentage of COVID-19 cases throughout the school district to be 1 percent or lower for two consecutive weeks before masks become optional. The BOE heard from parents supporting both sides of the mask issue before voting on the policy. The issue of masks in schools has been a hot topic in all systems in the Birmingham metro, and a topic that has divided communities across the state. As of Sept. 14, 122 students in the school system were absent with positive COVID-19 diagnoses, which represents 0.91 percent of the total students population of the school system.
