NORTHPORT, NY — Costello, a 5-year-old male tuxedo, was named the Northport Cat Rescue Association's Cat of the Week. "Costello lived outside in a cute beach town tucked away in Queens called Breezy Point, visiting a loving couple daily to get fed and for some kindness," Lora Wild, a volunteer with the rescue, said. "Sadly, the couple passed away and when their family came to pack up the home, they met Costello who was still coming every day for some food and love. He was confused and meowed, not understanding where his friends that took care to make sure he would not go hungry were." The family called the NCRA for help, according to Wild. "Costello has been in foster care for some time now, and with each passing day he becomes more loving," Wild, who is taking care of him, said. "He has made the most amazing transition from being timid and nervous to befriending anyone who walks into a room to meet him. As soon as he sees you, he comes right up to you and rubs his big head against you for pets. He is a big boy that you would expect to be tough, and yet he is a gentle giant, not a mean bone in his body." Costello likes to snuggle and is very vocal; he cries when someone who was giving him attention leaves the room. "He likes to have friends, including other cats, and gets along well with them too!" Wild said. Costello is FIV positive. FIV is short for feline immunodeficiency virus. FIV is only contagious among cats and is difficult to transmit. "Which means if Costello is your only cat, there are no concerns," Wild said. "Or if you have another FIV Positive cat, again it means nothing. Cats with FIV can also live happily with other cats and never spread their virus. In fact, Costello lived outdoors with another cat for years, and he remained FIV negative." Costello can still live a long and happy life, Wild said. He just needs the chance to do so. "It's been a long road for Costello," she said. "Years out in the elements, and a long time in rescue. When he looks at you, it is as if he is asking 'am I home yet?' We are all rooting for him, as this mush waits patiently with grace. If you have room in your family and in your heart for this loving boy, we know you will never regret it." Costello is neutered, has all his shots, is litter box-trained, and micro-chipped. Northport Cat Rescue is set to be at the Cow Harbor Fair on Sunday, Sept 19. "If you would like to know more about Costello, come on down and see us!" Wild said. "We have so many cats and kittens still waiting for their forever homes, we would love to tell you all about them!" If you are interested in meeting Costello, you can head to the Northport Cat Rescue Association website and fill out an application to let them know you would like to meet him or any of the other kittens and cats.
