My name is Consuela Munoz, a Gallup Certified Strengths Coach. Business leaders hire me to master their strengths-based leadership because most are facing the "Great Resignation" and won't retain "A" players, maintain superior results and struggle to manage time, teams, and talents. So, I help build and engage their natural leadership style for ultimate success. Let's talk about the phenomenon called The Great Resignation, also known as the Big Quit, which is the ongoing trend of employees voluntarily leaving their jobs, starting spring 2021 and going forward, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Prolonged exposure to the crises over the past 18 months has caused increased stress and anxiety for employees and leaders alike. It has also increased the competition for the best performers in an already challenging employment situation. Leaders who develop strengths-based leadership skills are more likely to succeed moving forward and avoid The Great Resignation. To confidently lead engaged, productive teams, managers will have to elevate their leadership skills in these five areas to gain the advantage needed. Attract the Best. The competition for top talent is heating up and the best leaders will attract the best performers. Employees had time to evaluate their life and career and are less likely to settle moving forward. They are also looking at the overall culture of a company to determine if it is a good fit for them. They want to work for a leader who treats them with respect and support in a culture the encourages growth and development. Being the top leader means finding and advancing your natural leadership style. Retain the Best. Keeping the best performers at your company means creating a culture that enables engagement. And I have a hint it doesn't mean ping pong tables and pizza parties. Employees must be able to do what they do best every day and have opportunities to grow from where they are good to where they are great. They must see a path of development and advancement if they will stay and stay engaged. Teamwork. With the increase in stress and anxiety in the workplace, there can be a decrease in functional relationships. A leader must focus on creating a well-rounded team, not a group of individuals. And, avoiding a situation where team members all think the same is essential. To have high performance, everyone does what they do best and understands how their team members strengths complement their own. This is vital. Communication: Getting communication accurate is about more than what you, the leader, communicate. A breakdown in communication between you and a team member is harmful but just as bad is a breakdown between team members. Both will affect how your leadership is perceived. It's essential that effort be spent on understanding how every member of the team, including the leader, delivers and accepts information. Execution Strategy. Don't rush into your execution based on how you have done it in the past, who would normally handle it, or what seems like the usual or standard way. Instead, take a step back and evaluate what results you'd like and what skills are needed to best achieve your results. Now, look at your team makeup and their skills to create a winning strategy for all of you. Managers will need to improve their strengths-based leadership skills in these five key areas to have the advantage needed to beat the Great Resignation. Understanding and applying your strengths and those of your team members will create a high-performance culture that is unstoppable.
