Press release from the Leng Campaign: Sept. 14, 2021 Mayor Curt Balzano Leng is exceptionally proud to accept the endorsement of the Hamden Police Union, UPSEU/COPS Local 062 for the Office of Mayor in the upcoming 2021 Democratic Primary. The Union, which voted to endorse Mayor Leng on Thursday, September 9th, has never before endorsed a Mayoral candidate in any Hamden election. The Police Union offered the following statement of endorsement, "The Hamden Police Union announces its support of Mayor Curt Balzano Leng in the upcoming Hamden mayoral election. Mayor Leng has consistently been a strong supporter of public safety in the Town of Hamden. He is a true partner in the Hamden Police Department's community outreach & crime prevention efforts. Mayor Leng also fought vigorously against the defunding of the Hamden Police Department and was instrumental in restoring the police officer positions that were recently cut in budget deliberations. He is a leader that promotes a progressive police department with advanced training for our law enforcement officers. Mayor Leng stands proudly in support of the Hamden Police Department…and the Hamden Police Union stands with him!" The endorsement comes days before the Democratic Primary, which will be held September 14th, 2021. Mayor Leng's record of supporting the Hamden Police Department & Public Safety, and the reforms that make them both stronger and more effective for everyone within the Hamden community, is crystal clear. Commenting, Mayor Leng said, "I am so pleased to receive this endorsement from the Police Union. My administration and the Police Department have worked hand-in-hand to improve Hamden and make our neighborhoods safer. We've accomplished a lot – more patrols and presence, new bike and walking beats, new community policing initiatives, officer trainings, violence prevention and intervention efforts, the establishment of the Strengthening Police & Community Partnership Council (SPCP), active participation in the Hamden Reducing Ethnic & Racial Disparities (RED) Committee and a focus on reformation through engagement, increased positive interaction with youth and more - and we have so much more planned! We are making a difference, and it matters. I will always support a safe Hamden, a strong Hamden Police Department and Fire Department, the safety services that protect our residents. Our residents depend on these services, and they deserve a Mayor fighting to keep them strong." "I think my grandfather, former Sgt. Andrew Balzano, would have been very proud of this and it's an honor that means a lot to my family and to our community. We need to all have each other's backs and there's never been a more important time for this to be what we don't just say, but put into action." This press release was produced by the Leng Campaign.
