Here are the top stories in Sacramento today: California State University recognized Sac State student Carla Cruz Medina, a graduate student in biology, with the highest recognition of student academic accomplishment in the CSU system, the Trustees' Award for Outstanding Achievement. The CSU system, each year, recognizes one student from each of the system's 23 campuses with the award, which honors scholars who overcome adversity, have financial need, demonstrate superior academic performance, and participate in community service. Scholarships range from $6,000 to $15,000. Way to go, Carla! (CSUS.edu) One man is dead and another was injured in a shooting on Fruitridge Road in South Sacramento. Police responded to a report of shots fired along the 2700 block of Fruitridge Road just after 11:20 p.m. on Sunday. The victims were transported to area hospitals where one succumbed to his wounds. Investigators are now looking into what led up to the shooting. No suspect information has been released at this point. (CBS Sacramento) Frances Buford Pullen was a World War II civilian pilot. This remarkable woman is a hero who received a special honor Sunday and a surprise parade outside her home for her 100th birthday! Her flight time included towing targets behind her plane while crews fired live ammunition at the targets. Happy birthday, Frances! And, given the dangers you put yourself in for your country, it's a milestone well deserved! (CBS Sacramento) After a year hiatus due to the pandemic, the Tower Bridge Dinner returned to Sacramento Sunday night! Nearly 850 people packed the bridge for a dinner crafted by six local lead chefs with hundreds of servers, sommeliers, bartenders and more. All funds earned for the night's dinner go towards creating the Farm to Fork Festival this coming weekend, as well as creating 17 scholarships for the children of local migrant farmworkers attending Sacramento State. (KCRA3) Firefighters with the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department are beginning to use drones to battle fires and tackle water rescues from the air. The department has about a dozen pilots and 17 aircraft. Metro Fire Captain Ryan Gifford said "[drones] have been used a lot for over-water search using thermal imaging. Looking for a heat signature of a person in a relatively cool body of water is very effective." As the technology continues to develop, Metro Fire said it plans to use the drones to help prevent wildfires by surveying vegetation growth in the spring to know what conditions crews will be working with as the fire season approaches.
